Panaji: The new academic year began on Monday across all the schools in Goa with 90 per cent of the students attending the classes.
For the first time in the history of Goa, the schools reopened on April 7, as against the practice of restarting the new academic year in the first week of June. The Academic year was preponed as a part of National Education Policy implemented in the state.
The classes for the standard 6th to 9th and 10th till 12th started on Monday.
State Education Secretary Prasad Lolienkar went around the schools on Monday morning to check the attendance. Lolienkar said that he has visited majority of the schools in Panaji locality to check the response of the students for the first day of the Academic Year.
“We also wanted to know whether students are upset because of preponing of the Academic Year. There is 90 per cent attendance in schools across Goa, some schools have reported 100 per cent attendance. All the students have come willingly,” he said.
Lolienkar, who interacted with the students, said that most of the students are happy that we have started the academic year from month of April.
“Some students were however upset,” he said adding that these students complained about the heat. Lolienkar said that 80 per cent students are happy over government’s decision to prepone the new academic year. “We also took other feedback on National Education Policy and what is their expectations from the students,” he said. Lolienkar said that the students told him that they want sports coaching at school level. “The Sports infrastructure should be created in the schools,” he added.
As per government data, Goa has 2,153 schools and higher secondary schools in the state.
