Porvorim: Opposition members on Monday rushed to the well of the Goa Legislative Assembly on the first day of the monsoon session after Speaker Ganesh Gaonkar disallowed a question on land conversion.
When the session began, Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao raised a point of order, questioning why a question on land conversion in the state had been disallowed.
He pointed out that the question was jointly tabled by six MLAs, including all three Congress MLAs, two AAP MLAs and one Revolutionary Goans Party MLA.
Alemao said they had sought information on No Development Areas in the state, but the Speaker had disallowed the question, citing the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business of the Goa Legislative Assembly.
Giving his ruling on the floor of the House, Speaker Gaonkar said the question was not allowed as the matter was sub judice due to a Public Interest Litigation filed by NGO Goa Foundation before the Goa Bench of the Bombay High Court.
As the Opposition benches continued to press for the question to be taken up, the Speaker rejected their demand. All six MLAs subsequently rushed to the well of the House.
The House was adjourned for 10 minutes as the Opposition members continued their protest in the well.
When the session reassembled, the Opposition benches once again rushed to the well. The Speaker ordered the marshals to escort out three MLAs, including Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao, Congress MLA Altone D’Costa and RGP MLA Viresh Borkar.
