Panaji: Goa recorded a 6.8 per cent increase in tourist arrivals by rail during the first five months of 2026, with nearly 20 lakh visitors reaching the coastal state between January and May, according to official data.

A statement issued by the State Tourism Department on Tuesday said that 19,87,862 tourists arrived in Goa by rail between January and May this year, compared to 18,60,568 during the corresponding period in 2025.

The arrivals also marked a 6.5 per cent increase over the same period in 2024, indicating sustained growth in rail travel to the state, it said.

State Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte said the continued rise in railway arrivals reflects growing confidence among travellers in Goa as a year-round destination.

“The continued growth in railway arrivals reflects the increasing confidence travellers have in Goa as a year-round destination. Increased rail connectivity, expanding tourism experiences beyond our beaches, and our sustained focus on quality tourism are encouraging more visitors to explore the state again and again,” he said.

The minister said the government has been diversifying tourism offerings by promoting heritage, spiritual, hinterland, wellness, adventure, cultural, and monsoon tourism to reduce dependence on seasonal beach tourism.

Tourism Director Kedar Naik said the steady rise in railway arrivals highlights Goa’s growing popularity and improved accessibility.

“Rail connectivity continues to play a vital role in bringing visitors from across India, enabling families, groups, and young travellers to experience Goa. As connectivity continues to improve, we look forward to welcoming even more visitors to explore the many experiences Goa has to offer,” he said.

The Tourism Department said the steady increase in rail arrivals demonstrates the positive impact of enhanced connectivity on tourism growth and visitor movement, adding that the state remains focused on building a resilient tourism ecosystem that benefits visitors, local communities, and the economy.
