Panaji: Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Limited (IPSCDL) has claimed that reports of damage to the shrine at Taad Maad, St Inez, were distorted.

In a media statement issued here, IPSCDL stated:

“It has come to our attention that certain distorted reports are circulating regarding the 250-meter sewage line and manhole construction work at Taad Maad, St. Inez, attributing damage to the nearby temple structure and banyan tree due to the Smart City project work. IPSCDL would like to clarify the following:

  1. No Damage to Shrine or Tree: The shrine at St. Inez remains completely intact, and there has been no impact on the nearby tree. Comprehensive shoring work has been undertaken, and all measures are in place to prevent any imminent danger.

  2. Gutter Wall Loosening: A portion of the retaining gutter wall has loosened due to excavation work, but there has been no collapse as reported. The gutter walls should not be mistaken for retaining walls. Some portions of the gutter were dismantled to allow shoring work while avoiding the existing live gas line, and this should not be mistaken for a collapse.

  3. Immediate Action Taken: Our team has already assessed the site, and necessary reinforcement and restoration measures are underway to ensure stability and public safety in view of the settlement of soil that occurred due to the required 12-meter excavation.

  4. Waterline Damage: Due to soil settlement, the live water pipeline developed a minor leak due to inherent pressure. Since a water leak could cause further settlement, the line has been shut and deactivated. This has temporarily stopped running tap water to three government quarters buildings and a garage only, and not the entire St. Inez zone, as has been misrepresented. However, water is being supplied through tankers, and work on connecting an alternate line should be restored by 5:00 PM today.

  5. Abandoning of Work: Work at such depths is not allowed after sunset to ensure the safety of our human resources. As work stops at 5:30 PM, this should not be considered abandonment. Moreover, the work is closely monitored by a team of engineers and is also under a Writ Petition, with IPSCDL assuming full responsibility for its progress.

  6. Challenges: IPSCDL requests support for the ongoing work in this challenging portion and fervently appeals to avoid distortion of facts, which creates fear among residents and affects the morale of the team working on the job.”
