Panaji: The Goa unit of the Congress party has found itself embroiled in controversy after its main poster for the Goa Statehood Day celebration on May 30 failed to include a photo of its national president, Mallikarjun Kharge.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused the Goa Congress of “humiliating the Dalit President,” while Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) President Amit Patkar has said the omission was an “error.”

GPCC had organised a function in Panaji on May 30, following the cancellation of a previously planned public meeting in Navelim where Kharge was expected to be present.

The BJP, on its official social media handle, posted the controversial poster and claimed: “Congress humiliated its Dalit President.”
“Mallikarjun Kharge’s photo deliberately left out from Congress’ official Goa Statehood Day banner — a snub to the party’s own national president?” the BJP wrote, highlighting that the banner featured all prominent state and national leaders, including Sonia Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, but not Kharge.

The images of GPCC President Amit Patkar and Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao were prominently displayed.

When contacted, Patkar said, “This is a small error. Why are you making an issue out of it? We are raising more serious issues against the BJP.”

He clarified that Kharge’s image was “erroneously” left out of one poster. “If you check all other posters we put up across the city, his picture is there,” he added.
