Panaji: Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat on Friday said that the union of like-minded anti-BJP parties can be a possibility for 2022 Goa Legislative Assembly election.

The LoP was speaking on the program Prime Encounter which will be aired tonight on Prime Media Channel.

Kamat said that the forces which are against BJP should unite together to contest the election.

The LoP went to add that “union of like-minded parties, was his personal opinion.”

“As a chief of congress legislative party, I would be putting across to my high command that there should be union of the like-minded anti-BJP parties for upcoming Goa Legislative election,” he said.

Congress party has already announced that they have begun the process to re-organise the party ahead of 2022 Goa elections.

When asked about Mahagathbandhan, Kamat said “it may  not be called as Mahagathbandhan. But there can be arrangement or understanding between the parties on the basis of alliance or seat sharing.”

The former chief minister said that the regional parties like Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party, Goa Forward Party along with Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) can be considered for this union.

Congress, which had won on the majority seats in Goa Legislative Assembly in 2017, had to sit in the opposition after BJP joined hands with the regional parties to form a majority on the floor of the House.

Congress had won on 17 seats followed by BJP on 13. In all, 13 Congress MLAs have left the party since 2017, all of whom have joined BJP.

Kamat said that the Congress party has its own base in the state and any amount of deserting by the leaders will not have a dent on the future of the party.

“People have seen how, Congress MLAs have switched over the side. They are waiting for the elections to teach them a lesson,” he said.
