Monsoon delay: Goa has a drinking water storage of one month left

Panaji: With delayed monsoon over the coastal state, the Goa government has said that there is enough water to fulfil the drinking requirement of the state for another month.
State Water Supply Department Minister Subhash Phal Desai told GNH on Thursday that the water level at various reservoirs in the state has been reduced drastically, as the monsoon is delayed.
“But there is no need to panic. There is enough water to fulfil the requirement for a month,” he said, adding that the state government will issue strict advisories to ensure that the existing water is not exhausted before that time.
He said that he has been receiving calls from various section of the people including industries inquiring about the condition of water supply in the state.
Phal Desai said that his department will hold meeting with the Minister for Water Resources Department Subhash Shirodkar and his officials to “evaluate the data of water available in various dams across the state.”
The minister credited improved water distribution system to prolonged available of the resource (water).

Phal Desai said that the state government has improved the water distribution system due to which there is no dearth of water. He said that his department has successfully handled the water management during the summers.

“There is no scarcity right now but that does not mean it won’t happen in the future,” he cautioned.

Giving details, he said that the water supply at Selaulim dam which has the drawing capacity of 280 MLD per day is 27 per cent full. This dam provides water to entire South Goa. Kushavati District and parts of North Goa.

He said that the water level at Anjunem dam located in Sattari taluka (North Goa) has plummeted to 9.9per cent. This project on Goa-Karnataka border has a capacity of drawing 50 MLD water which is treated at two treatment plants – Padoshe and Dattawadi, located in surrounding areas.

Phal Desai said that the water level at Mhaisal Dam in Shiroda (North Goa), near Ponda, is 19 per cent (nineteen percent). The dam has a capacity to draw water between 10 to 14 MLD per day.

Situated in the Southernmost taluka of Canacona, Chapoli dam which has 15 MLD plant capacity has ample water, he said, adding that there will be no shortage at Canacona.

Amthane Reservoir in North Goa has good stock which supplies water to Bardez taluka, he said.

Phal Desai said that IMD has predicted that the monsoon will resume in the state by next weekend and it will continue thereafter.
