Merchants’ Assn call off strike as CM keeps municipality ordinance in abeyance

Panaji: The Municipality (Amendment) Ordinance which received criticism by merchants has been kept in abeyance by the Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant after meeting All Goa Merchants’ Association at BJP office in Panaji on Monday. The Chief Minister has asked the Association to consult a lawyer and frame their demands which would help in ease of business.

“We will withdraw our strike which was planned on January 7, as CM has cooperated with us and fulfilled our demands,” said the president of All Goa Merchants’ Association.
Earlier today, Calangute MLA Michael Lobo MLA commenting on the amendment to municipalities ordinance reckoned that there needs to be a discussion between stake holders, shop keepers and traders as they will be government once the amendment is enforced.
Lobo said the amendment to the said municipalities ordinance should be kept in abeyance and a through study should be conducted as to how this act will affect people. “I have spoken to Sadanand Shet Tanavade BJP Goa president about the this issue, I will speak to CM Sawant tomorrow, I believe the CM will agree in the  interest of Goan locals and stakeholders,” said Michael Lobo.
The amendment to the Municipalities was not well received by the Goan merchants who believed its is a “death knell to the tradition of Goan merchants”.
