Panaji: The Directorate of Health Services has issued a public health advisory in anticipation of the upcoming heat season to safeguard individuals from heat-related illnesses.

DHS has advised staying hydrated by consuming liquids such as water, lemon-based drinks, coconut water, buttermilk, ORS, and water-rich fruits and vegetables like watermelon, muskmelon, oranges, and cucumber. It also recommends using head coverings or umbrellas, applying sunscreen, and wearing light-colored, loose cotton clothing when going outside. People are urged to check IMD alerts via media or their website and look out for elderly individuals, the sick, pregnant and lactating mothers, infants, people living alone, and those with disabilities for any signs of dehydration.

Call 108 immediately if a person has a high body temperature and is either unconscious, confused, or has stopped sweating. Shift them to the nearest healthcare facility and, while waiting, move them to a cool place, apply cold water to large areas of their skin or clothing, and fan them as much as possible.

It is further advised to avoid stepping out between 12–3 PM, especially on days when heat alerts are announced. People should also avoid tea, coffee, alcohol, and soft drinks, as well as oily and high-protein diets. Additionally, avoid leaving children or pets in closed parked cars, as temperatures inside can rise significantly, and refrain from cooking in the afternoon or during high temperatures—opt for cooler times instead.
