Panaji: Goa’s Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat on Sunday asserted that the State government should hand over the COVID-19 management work to the Task Force comprising of the experts from Civil Society and the Indian Army.

In a statement released here, Kamat has also expressed the need to extend the current lockdown, which culminates on Monday (tomorrow) in the morning.

“With unstoppable rise in the cases and increasing number of deaths, People are frightened and feeling lost,” he said.

The former Chief Minister alleged that the insensitive BJP government has nothing to give them the confidence.

“As the situation is grim, extending lockdown with strict enforcement is the only option left,” he commented.

The Leader of Opposition said that the need of the hour is to hand over the COVID-19 management to a Task Force comprising of experts from Civil Society and the Army.

“Enough is enough, let us not play with the innocent lives any more,” he said.

The Congress leader said that “one cannot rely anymore on the BJP Government at the Centre as well as the State who remained in celebrations mode throughout the year without creating any medical infrastructure and services.”

“It is high time that a Task Force is constituted to handle the COVID-19 management and the government takes a back seat,” he said.

Referring to the upcoming monsoon season, Kamat said that we need to look at one month ahead from now.

“Once monsoon starts, things will become more challenging. We need to anticipate frequent power cuts, road blockages, flooding, which will seriously affect the Covid management,” he said.

“The steps need to be taken on top priority for initiating preventive measures right now,” Kamat added.

The Leader of Opposition said that the vaccines should be procured on war-footing and vaccination drives should be initiated with a target to complete first dose by mid July for all the population.

“The Task Force must be empowered with financial powers to take decisions in the best interest of the people,” demanded Kamat.
