Panaji: The political leaders in Goa are demanding the extension of the current lockdown, which will culminate on Monday, to break the chain of COVID-19 infection.

State Port Minister Michael Lobo, Opposition MLAs Rohan Khaunte and Prasad Gaonkar and Goa Pradesh Youth Congress Committee on Saturday, individually, demanded that the lockdown be extended.

“I have personally spoke to CM @DrPramodPSawant to continue with the preventive measures for an additional ten days and imply stricter SOPs, this is the voice of the people of Goa and we need to collectively break the chain of the Covid-19 Virus,” Lobo tweeted on Saturday evening.

Earlier during the day, Independent MLA Rohan Khaunte, in his letter to the Chief minister, said that the lockdown should be extended by another 15 days.

“In furtherance to my previous correspondences on this issue to your office, I continue to stand by my opinion to have a 15-days complete lock down of the State which would help us rectify our statistics,” Khaunte said in a letter to the CM.

“In view of the situation in my Constituency, I urge the requirement of a strict lock down for each Panchayat area to break the fast spread of this double mutant virus,” he added.

Sanguem MLA Prasad Gaonkar also echoed the same sentiments. After visiting the villages in his constituency which are affected by the COVID-19 infection, he said that lockdown for another 15 days is required to break the chain.

“We have been reeling under this problem for over one year now; somewhere we have to break the chain. The second wave is bigger than the first, we need a longer lockdown for 15 days,” he said.

Goa Pradesh Youth Congress President Varad Mardolkar has  demanded to extend the lockdown period by another fifteen days. “We need extended lockdown as Goa has grappled with a massive second wave of COVID 19 and the government has failed to combat it,” said Mardolkar.
