Panaji: Goa University on Monday constituted a fact-finding committee after one of its professors was accused of leaking the question paper for the Master’s degree in Physics.
Two different police complaints were filed against a professor of Goa University on Sunday and Monday, accusing him of leaking the question paper.
While the first complaint was filed on Sunday by social activist Kashinath Shetye and other like-minded citizens, another complaint was filed on Monday by the Congress-affiliated National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) at Agassaim police station (which covers the Goa University campus).
The complaint accused the professor of “theft of the paper for the purpose of cheating other students and disclosing the same to his girlfriend to secure the highest marks, in connivance with officials of Goa University who helped him go scot-free.”
NSUI leader Naushad Choudhary told reporters outside Agassaim police station that the theft of the paper amounted to injustice to several other students who had appeared for the examination.
“An average girl student has topped the examination, while those who studied, burning the midnight oil, had to suffer,” he said.
The issue snowballed into a major controversy after Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) protested outside the chamber of Vice Chancellor Harilal Menon, questioning his silence over the issue.
ABVP students sought to know why Goa University did not take any action despite knowing that the paper was leaked. “The papers should have been reset, and immediate action should have been taken against the professor. This is an injustice towards students who appeared for the examination,” an ABVP leader said.
Speaking to ABVP-affiliated students, the Vice Chancellor stated that he had already constituted the fact-finding committee, which will submit its report within 48 hours.
He added that he would be able to comment only after reviewing the report of the fact-finding committee.
