Panaji: Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) ambitious pan-India project National Health Volunteers Campaign, an initiative to train health volunteers ahead of possible third wave of COVID-19 will launch in Goa on Saturday.

A total of 60 doctors, specializing in various fields will be trained by a team of four doctors headed by renowned oncologist and convenor of BJP Medical Cell Dr Shekhar Salkar. Dr Salkar and his team recently underwent a comprehensive training in Delhi.

The first batch of 20 doctors will undergo a day-long training on Saturday in the presence of Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, BJP Goa State President Sadanand Shet Tanavade and Member of Parliament Vinod Sonkar. The remaining 40 doctors will be trained by the 20 trained doctors on August 15. The sessions will include concept and general knowledge about COVID-19, vaccination while it will also hold training on how to improve immunity through proper diet and yoga among others.

The purpose of this campaign is to organize a special training program for its workers across the country to prepare them to help people and the administration if there is an outbreak of third wave of COVID-19.

Keeping this in mind, BJP Goa State President Sadanand Shet Tanavade said the doctors will further undertake training of the booth level karyakartas as two youth (male and female) from each booth will be chosen for the campaign.

“The trained workers will visit various villages to create awareness and collect necessary information so as to provide relief. Armed with the training, the volunteers will be able to help others, impart COVID-19 appropriate behaviour among the people, and provide basic medical assistance like checking of body temperature, oxygen level, etc,” Dr Salkar said. The volunteers will be health care workers, not doctors

He emphasized that the party is ‘very serious’ about helping the nation in the fight against COVID-19. “It is a total health oriented program. COVID-19 is our main target and our focus is early diagnosis and less mortality as much as possible,” Dr Salkar said.

Tanavade said the party has constituted a three member committee headed by Dr Salkar to oversee the program across the State. Each committee at North and South Goa level has also been constituted which comprises of doctors and IT experts. BJP Goa spokesperson and ex-MLA Sidhart Kuncaliencar and BJP spokesperson Sharmad Raiturkar are also an active part of the training team.
