Margao: People of Goa are aware who is responsible for stopping the mining activity in Goa. All the Goans including the mining dependents have seen the viral videos of those who claimed credit for stopping the mining activity stated Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat while reacting to the statement made by Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant holding Congress Government responsible for the current mining scenario in Goa.
As regards delay in mining lease renewals in 2007 are concerned, the then Congress Government could not go ahead with the lease renewals as it is mandatory for the lease holder to fulfil all the conditions required for the renewals before the Government grants the approval.
As the process of fulfilling various conditions required for renewals was time consuming, the MMRD Act of Government of India had a deeming provision in the said Act to consider a particular lease as “Deemed Extended” till the application of the lease holder is rejected by the Government. Mines across the country were under operations under this deeming clause.
Our Government had even moved for collection of Stamp Duty on Renewal of Leases which was held up due to some queries raised by GMOEA/GMA.
Congress Party has always made it clear that resumption of mining is very important and we will support all efforts of the Government to ensure that mining activities starts at the earliest
