Margao: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will participate in the party’s ongoing Goy Rakhon Yatra in Goa on Sunday and address a public meeting in Margao in the evening, a senior party functionary said.

Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president Girish Chodankar told PTI that Gandhi would join the 28-day-long yatra on its concluding day on Sunday by addressing a public meeting in Margao in the evening.

The yatra, which began on September 22, is scheduled to culminate on October 18 after covering all 40 Assembly constituencies in the coastal state. The Congress has projected the campaign as a movement to safeguard Goa’s land, identity, environment and cultural heritage while reaching out to people across the state.

The party’s campaign has raised issues including land conversion, unemployment, corruption, public safety and the preservation of Goa’s distinctive social and cultural identity. Through the yatra, Congress leaders and workers have sought to connect with local communities and highlight concerns over the state’s development and future.

The campaign comes ahead of the 2027 Goa Assembly elections, with the Congress seeking to strengthen its grassroots presence and mobilise support across constituencies, including those represented by the ruling BJP.

The yatra has also provided a platform for the party to raise concerns over development projects and land-use changes, which have triggered protests in several parts of Goa. The Congress has maintained that protecting the state’s natural resources and heritage must remain central to its development agenda.

Gandhi was earlier scheduled to participate in the yatra but had to postpone his visit owing to protests in Delhi over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, Chodankar said.

His participation on the concluding day is expected to bring national-level attention to the Congress campaign as the party prepares for the next Assembly elections.

The public meeting in Margao will mark the culmination of the month-long outreach programme, which the Congress has used to engage with voters and highlight issues it considers central to Goa’s future.
