Panaji: Goa has set aside Rs 2 crore to incentivise international charter flights as the state looks to attract more overseas tourists during the upcoming winter season, Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte said.

The incentive programme is aimed at encouraging more charter operators to add Goa to their schedules and expand the state’s international air links.

Goa is expected to have new or increased connections with Russia, Poland and Kazakhstan this season. Charter flights from Manchester and London Gatwick in the UK are also scheduled to begin in November, Khaunte said.

“For us, every new flight means opportunities for local businesses and communities,” the minister said.

Khaunte said strengthening international connectivity had been a priority since he took charge in April 2022, with the state working with the central government, airlines, tour operators and the tourism industry.

The government is also trying to encourage visitors to look beyond Goa’s beaches through its “Goa Beyond Beaches” initiative, which promotes longer stays and visits to villages as well as the state’s heritage, culture and cuisine.

Khaunte said Goa was working with the Centre and tourism industry stakeholders to prepare for a strong winter tourism season.
