Panaji: Several leader of Congress party in Goa are miffed over the decision of Congress Legislative Party (CLP) not to field the party candidates for the upcoming Zilla Panchayat election.
The election for all the 50 Zilla Panchayat constituencies would be held on March 22. The State Election Commission has announced that the polls would be fought on partylines.
Several frontal organizations including Goa Pradesh Mahila Congress Committee, Goa Pradesh Youth Congress Committee, members of Pradesh Congress Committee and others held a meeting in Panaji after CLP announced that the party won’t field the candidate for ZP election.
CLP leader Digambar Kamat on Friday had said that the party will not field the candidates.
GPCC General Secretary Sankulp Amonkar told reporters on Saturday that the party leaders are of the opinion that the election should be fought on partylines.
“Congress Executive Committee had decided that they will field candidates for ZP election. After that party organization had even started campaigning in various places,” Amonkar said.
He said that that CLP, without consulting the party organization, came up with the statement against contesting the election.
“We don’t want to comment on the statement of CLP. But we will petition party’s Goa chief Girish Chodankar to contest election on partylines as it will help to revive our voters’ base,” he said.
