Law introduce to make illegal name & surname change as cognizable offence

PORVORIM: Law Minister Nilesh Cabral today informed House that government has introduced an amendment to the Change of Name and Surname Act, to imprison a person if he or she fails to follow the t procedure laid down under the Act.

Cabral said that ‘The Goa Change of Name and Surname (Amendment) Bill, 2019’ has been introduced in the House so as to lay down a proper procedure for changing the name and surname of a person.

 “The people who do not follow the procedure would be booked under Cognizable offence. The person would be imprisoned for a period upto three months,” he said referring to the Bill.

Minister admitted on the Floor of the House that 100 percent of the total name changes, that are advertised in the newspapers, are not as per procedure and hence are illegal.
