Based on request from State Governments of Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka late PM 06 Aug
19, the Headquarters Western Naval Command based at Mumbai pressed into immediate action. Operation ‘Varsha Rahat ‘ saw overnight deployment of 41 teams in difficult terrain and weather conditions in Maharashtra and Goa area and about 11,124 personnel have been safely rescued by the Indian Navy. Additionally, teams were also deployed in Karnataka Area and about 3115 personnel were put to safety. As on date, 1305 Kgs of relief material has been air dropped in Karnataka and 1890 Kgs in Maharashtra. These have helped about 5000 flood hit victims.
As pad of Operation “Varsha Rahat”, the Goa Naval Area deployed a total 6 teams comprising 40 personnel since the last 7 days. These included 3 officers and 23 divers, who were airlifted to
Kolhapur in adverse weather conditions and 12 divers were deployed in North Goa- Mapusa and Pernem. A total of 17 helicopter sorties for a duration of 34 hours were undertaken since 07 Aug 19 at Belgaum and surrounding areas. A total of 2517 people were rescued by Goa teams out.of which 138 marooned people were saved by Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) ex Goa Naval Area. Further, 7 sorties were undertaken by Dornier Aircraft to support relief
operations.
IN teams from Goa were deployed at North Goa (Mapusa, Pernem, Karnali and Narela), Kolhapur
(Narsobawadi, Bobnal, Bhairewadi, Bastwad, Aurwad, Shiroli, Chikali, Rajapur and Rajapurwadi Villages), Belgaum and Hampi.
It is indeed commendable on the part of Goa Naval Area that despite stormy conditions which precluded aircraft operations, the aircraft and helicopters were airborne despite grave risks to their own lives. The 40 personnel from Goa Naval Area worked tirelessly from sunrise to sunset, 24 X 7 and undertook nonstop rescue operations. The Indian Navy once again rose to the
occasion and without waiting for long clearances, pressed into humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.
