Canacona: Acusing some local BJP leaders of going all out to stop his efforts to improve education facilities in Canacona taluka, Deputy Speaker Isidore Fernandes said he managed to overcome the hurdles and get the Portuguese-era building renovated to house the Canacona ADEI office.

Fernandes was speaking at the inaugural function of the renovated building housing Cancona ADEO office in the heart of Chaudi town.

“Because of various limited education facilities in the taluka, many Canconkars have had to migrate in in distant towns and cities for the sake of their children.”

“At my request, South Goa Dy Director of Education convened a meeting of all taluka stakeholders (educational institutions), but this was objected to by some BJP leaders of Canacona, forcing then CM late Manohar Parrikar, also holding education portfolio, to cancel the meeting.”

“I did not get deterred and continued my efforts by meeting some education institutions and managed to bring a science steam to a Canacona college, increase seats at the ITI and also obtain sanction for the repair/renovate of the dilapidated building which houses the Canacona ADEI.”

Taking a further dig at the local BJP leaders, Fernandes said: “You keep blocking the good things we are doing for the benefit of people. I challenge you to stop me from pursuing development in Canacona taluka.”

“Today, this refurbished and renovated building is now handed over to the ADEI to function from here.” Fernandes said.

Incidentally, this ADEI building is a Portuguese-era building formerly called the “Auavl” and had housed a Konkani-Marathi primary school after liberation, before the ADEI office was shifted there.

others present at the function included Cancona Municipal Council Chairperson Nitu Desai and assistant Director of Education (South Zone) Dr Uday Gaonkar.

Dr Gaonkar stated that many government schools were back on the right track and had been doing exceptionally well.

“Cancona is not lagging behind, but your support to government schools will also help improve the educational standards.” said Dr Gaonkar.

Others who spoke on the occasion were CMC Chairperson Nitu Desai, Chaudi Councillor/ex-Chairperson Chaya Komarpant and Cancona ADEI Ganesh Shet.
