Porvorim: Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant told the House that Employment Exchange Act would be amended to ensure that the private companies give priority to the locals during their recruitments.

Sawant said on Friday during the ongoing session of the assembly that the state government, at present, cannot force the private industries to hire local candidates.

He said that the employment exchange currently sponsors the candidates during recruitment drives by the private industries. “We cannot force any industry to take the candidate, that depends on skill, qualification and attitude of the candidate,” Sawant said.

The chief minister assured the House that the state government will amend Employment Exchange Act, 1959 taking industry into confidence. “We will amend making it mandatory for the industries to inform the government, if they are hiring ten or more staff. Earlier, they had to inform, only when their recruitment was for 25 and more staff,” he said.

“If we do this (amend), you will see that maximum youth are employed,” he said.

Sawant also pointed out to the announcement in the Union Budget which has declared internship with CSR, which will result in more job creations in the private sector.

State Revenue Minister Atanasio Monserratte said that as far as employment exchange is concerned, we have made it mandatory for the company to inform the Employment Exchange.

He said that the penalty on the companies violating this norm would be increased.
