Goa government seeks Rs 170 crore from centre as flood relief package

Panaji: Goa government has sought Rs 170 crore from the central government towards the flood relief to compensate the citizens and farmers who were affected after spate of incessant rains during first fortnight of August.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant told reporters that total loss to the property and agriculture due to the recent floods has been estimated to be around Rs 157 crore.

“We have written letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and also to the Union Home minister Amit Shah requesting him for the funds to the tune of Rs 170 crore,” he said.

Sawant said that the process to get funds from the centre takes time and it might take another eight months to get the money.

Goa government has disbursed more than Rs two and half crore for the people affected due to the floods, including the farmers who have lost their crop, he said.

Sawant said that the relief has been provided from Chief Minister’s Relief Fund and also Disaster Management Fund to the people who were affected with the floods, which were witnessed in the State during first fortnight of August.

“We have already distributed Rs one and half crore to those people whose houses and properties were damaged in the flood. Besides that today (Friday), we have distributed Rs one crore to the farmers whose crop was damaged due to the floods,” the chief minister said.

He stated that more than 800 people were benefitted with the relief, which was given through chief minister’s relief fund and Disaster Management Fund.

Sawant said that state-run Economic Development Corporation has contributed Rs fifty lakh towards Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. “We have also appealed various industrial houses to contribute for the fund,” he said.

The areas in Bardez, Bicholim and Pernem talukas were severely affected due to the floods that occurred after heavy rainfall in the state.
