Goa: Alzheimer’s disease, the most common cause of dementia, is a progressive brain disorder that gradually affects memory, thinking, and the ability to perform everyday activities. According to Dr Amrut S D, Consultant – Neurology, Manipal Hospital, Goa, recognising early symptoms such as memory loss, difficulty finding words, poor decision-making, personality changes, and trouble with planning is crucial for timely diagnosis and treatment.

Dr Amrut highlighted that advances in medical science have significantly improved the early detection of Alzheimer’s disease. New blood tests that measure biomarkers such as plasma phosphorylated tau (p-tau217, p-tau181), amyloid-beta, and neurofilament light chain (NfL), along with MRI and PET scans, are helping doctors diagnose the condition more accurately, even before symptoms become severe.

He emphasised that while medications can help manage symptoms, non-drug interventions, including cognitive stimulation, regular physical activity, social engagement, and caregiver education, play an equally important role in maintaining quality of life. He also noted that Donanemab, recently approved in India for select patients with early-stage Alzheimer’s disease, marks a significant advancement by targeting amyloid plaques and helping slow cognitive decline.

“Early diagnosis, timely treatment, and comprehensive supportive care can help people with Alzheimer’s maintain their independence and improve their quality of life,” Dr Amrut said.
