Goa: National Organisation of Tobacco Eradication (NOTE) Goa, Consumer VOICE- a New Delhi based non-profit organisation working on tobacco control issues in the state of Goa, and Manipal Hospitals Goa, today organised a conference to discuss the implementation of Government of Goa’s policy on mandating licensing for vendors who sell tobacco products.
The event was focused to spread awareness about the health hazards of tobacco and sensitization of various stakeholders including,municipal officials, health official, social activists, parents and media to support vendor licensing- which is an effective tollfor tobacco control. World No Tobacco Day 2019 is focussing on the impact tobacco has on the lung health of people worldwide.
Global Adult Tobacco Survey 2 (GATS 2) released by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) in year 2017,shows 9.7 % percent of adults in Goa consume tobacco in some form or the other.
Earlier The Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India, on dated 21st September 2017 and Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation on Sept. 28, 2018 issued advisories to all states for ensuring licensing mechanism for tobacco vendors with restriction on sale of candy, chips etc. which are mainly used to attract kids and youngsters to tobacco shops.
On February11, 2019 the Department of Urban Development of Goa issued a circular (10/56/2014-DMA/3416) directing all urban local bodies in Goa to develop mechanism to provide permission/authorization/ vendor licensing through ULBs (Urban local bodies) to retail shops selling tobacco productswith restriction on sale on non-tobacco products as candies, chips, soft drinks etc. All participants including parents, activists, health welcomed and appreciated this step to protect public health and demanded it to implement strictly.
On the occasion Chief Guest for the function, Dr Anil Mehndiratta – IMA Goa State President in his speech extended full support of IMA Goa State to the National Organisation of Tobacco Eradication (NOTE) Goa for strict implementation of Tobacco Vendor Licensing”.
Guest of Honour Dr.Amita Kenkre Kamat Chief of Community Dentistry Department at Goa Dental College spoke of the extreme difficulty that a patient experience in withdrawing from tobacco consumption and said that therefore it is best not to even start tobacco use.
During the session Dr. Shekhar Salkar Chairman NOTE and HOD & Senior Consultant Surgical Oncology, Lectured on E Cigarettes, while Dr. Eugene Rent – Consultant Surgical Oncology spoke on the Ill effects of Tobacco Consumption and Dr. Sanyal of Consumer VOICE spoken on Vendor Licensing
A total of around 70 people attended the program consisting of 21 Sub Inspectors from Goa Police, 11 Municipal Inspectors from the Directorate of Municipal Administration, 4 Inspectors from Dpt of Food and Drugs Administration, Goa Dental College, IMA Goa State, parents and NGO’s.
Giving the vote of thanks, Dr. Shekhar Salkar, Chairman NOTE and HOD Oncology Dpt of Manipal Hospitals Goa thanked Shri Pranab Nanda,( IPS) DGP of Goa, Shri.Jaspal Singh [IPS]-IGP of Goa, Smt. Jyoti Sardesai –FDA Director and Dr. Tariq Thomas [IAS] Director of Directorate of Municipal Administration, for having deputed their Inspectors to attend the Seminar.
He also thanked the Chief Guest and Guest of Honour for having spared their time to attend this event and render their support for a noble cause and thanked Manipal Hospitals Goa [represented by Dr.Madan Dang. -Medical Superintendent of Manipal Hospitals Goa] for having graciously provided the venue for observing the “World No tobacco Day 2019”.
Towards the end of the seminar, a resolution was passed to take up with the Chief Minister of Goa urging the immediate ban of E Cigarettes in the State of Goa.
