Porvorim: Animal Husbandry Minister Mauvin Godinho today said that it is a wrong perception that BJP-led government in the State is against the meat eaters.

Godinho was responding to a Zero Hour mention by BJP legislator Glenn Ticlo who sought to know why State run slaughterhouse Goa Meat Complex Limited has been rendered non functional.

The minister said that just because a BJP led government is ruling in Goa, a false propaganda has been made that we are against the meat eaters and that is why we are not allowing the GMCL to function.

“That is totally false. The functioning of GMCL came to half in October 2017 when animals were not allowed to be brought for slaughtering by a NGO,” he said.

“Some NGO called Anjali Anand created the problem. This NGO is not even from Goa,” he said.

“ We were projected that we are doing some kind of cruelty to animals and there was lot of pressure being mounted on us,” Godinho said.

The minister said by the time all the problems in getting the animals was sorted out the permissions from agencies like FSSAI, Goa State Pollution Control Board and State Factories and Boilers department had expired.

He said that  now all the statutory permissions required to run the slaughterhouse has been obtained. ‘We will put GMCL to operation from August 22, which is Bakri Eid, provided we get animals to slaughter,” the minister said.

Godinho stated that at present the beef has been sourced from neighbouring Belgaum in Karnataka in the State.
