Vijai Sardesai, Fatorda’s MLA and President of Goa’s only regionalistic party – Goa Forward, represents a powerful political force that positions Goa in an optimistic and positive direction. Vijai from whom I have constantly learned from, and now work with, has always put Goa above all else, advocating and striving to create a state reflective of our unique culture, traditions and lifestyle.

Born on 14th June 1970 to Dr. Jaivant Sardesai, Vijai followed the footsteps of this true Goan gentleman who proudly represented our state and our country at an international level. Vijai pursued his graduation in agriculture and dedicated himself to the study of agriculture and conditions particular to Goa in an attempt to help preserve and advance cultivation methods through a combination of traditional techniques and state-of-the-art technologies.

However, given to dreaming big, Vijai’s entry into politics was brought about by a compelling need to bring about sustainable change and a new direction for Goa. From a vibrant student leader to Chairman of Goa University to Fatorda MLA to Deputy Chief Minister we all know, Vijai Sardesai embodies the true Goan ethos and aspiration that originate from our unique Goan identity. In his political career he has ushered in a new, refreshing way of thinking for our people, based on their regionalistic aspirations, and by always putting the interests of Goemkars first. So his founding of Goa Forward as Goa’s only regionalistic party is no accident. His relentless questioning in the assembly as a vociferous and dutiful opposition member has helped expose the misdeeds of the government as much as uphold the ideals of our vibrant democracy. He brought in, perhaps for the first time, the belief that Goans can achieve whatever they set out to do, reinstating trust in Goan enterprise and acumen.

In these difficult times, due not only to COVID-19 Pandemic but also to the appointment of Pramod Sawant as Chief Minister, the burden on common Goemkars has increased multi-fold; providing no hope, no solace and no future for even hardworking Goans. Understanding this grave situation, Vijai Sardesai has embarked on a mission to rectify this misfortune and to ensure that Goemkars get back on their feet and Goa is rebuilt. From Mollem to Old Goa to Mhadei to COVID-19, Vijai has been in the forefront to expose the incompetent and indifferent attitude of the government that has led Goa down a destructive path. Vijai has been vociferous in voicing the will of all Goemkars, and courageous in fighting for the future of Goa.

Vijai Sardesai’s vision for Goa is one that empowers the state to be future ready. He sees a Goa that is capable and competent, a Goa that turns away from its bad phase and looks forward to a new hope. He has said many times to me that “Goa is special, she is a place that has stood the test of history and continues to do so, and we have to honour her in the most appropriate way possible.” For Vijai Sardesai, goals are necessary to guide Goa towards a future that is determined by the people. He wants a Goa shaped by the needs of our future generations, one that preserves jobs and livelihoods of our people across industries, and a complete rethink of the way we see governance.

I stand behind that vision because they reflect the ambitions of all Goemkars. As my leader, teacher and friend turns 51, today on 14th of June 2021, I wish him all the strength, resilience and courage on behalf of all the people of Goa to take our state forward. Vijai Sardesai will take Goa forward, his outlook reinforces Goa’s aspiration and ambition.
