Margao Municipality to name Road in the name of Manohar Parrikar

Margao: Margao Municipal Council resolved to name the newly commissioned road from Arlem Circle to Ravindra Bhavan Circle in Fatorda as ‘Manohar Parrikar Road’. Councillor Lyndon Pereira suggested that since a total of Rs. 80 crores was spent on constructing this iconic road which boasts of first of its kind, dedicated underground duct to house all pipelines for water, electricity and sewerage and to accommodate all other fiber optic cables and to appreciate the efforts of late. Ex. Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar’s contribution to sanction funds to the tune of Rs. 200 crore for various projects in Fatorda it would be apt to name this road after Manohar Parrikar.

Margao Municipal Council Chairperson Dr. Babita Prabhudesai also briefed the media about various resolutions adopted by the council during its meeting. MMC resolved to purchase 2 containerized waste processing plants to treat mixed solid waste that accumulates at the various dark spots all over the city. Councillor Tito Cardoso said, “There has been furore among citizens of the city with regard to piling up of garbage at various ‘dark spots’ around the city. This garbage menace is an eyesore around the city and also poses a health hazard to the residents of the area. There is an urgent need for the council to procure these containerized waste processing plants to treat this mixed solid waste. This technology has be proven and worked in states like Delhi and U.P. in PM Narendra Modi’s constituency in Varanasi.” The council resolved to purchase two of these plants on priority and install one each in Fatorda and Margao to treat daily garbage.

The council also resolved to demarcate vending zones all over the city so as to regulate the sale of goods by hawkers who squat along the roads. Councilor Lyndon Pereira suggested that vending zones be demarcated in 8 wards in Fatorda. It was decided to incur an expenditure to the tune of Rs. 10 lakhs for each ward to develop these vending zones in keeping with aesthetics of the city.

Councillor Glenn Andrade suggested that a statue of Dr. Jack de Sequeira be installed at the Ravindra BHavan traffic island to commemorate the ‘Father of the Opinion Poll’. Other resolutions adopted were to name the road around the Hospicio Hospital as Padre Miranda Square, renaming of the Bolshe Circle at Gogol as ‘St. Joaquim Circle’, the Varde Valaulikar road was renamed as ‘Shenoi Goembab Road’ since Varde Valaulikar was more popularly known as Shenoi Goembab. The traffic island at the Gogol-Housing Board junction was named after noted Konkanni writer and activist ‘Floriano Vaz’.
