Porvorim: BJP MLA Isidore Fernandes is all set to be the next Deputy Speaker of Goa Legislative Assembly as he was the lone contender for the post on the last day of filing the nominations on Wednesday.
A senior official attached to State Legislature department said that they have received only one candidature for the post of Deputy Speaker from BJP MLA Isidore Fernandes. Wednesday was the last day to file the nomination for the post, which fell vacant after Michael Lobo resigned from it.
The formal announcement on the election for the post of Deputy Speaker would be made tomorrow, Thursday, he said.
Lobo had resigned as Deputy Speaker, hours before he along with three others were inducted in Pramod Sawant-led cabinet.
Fernandes who was amongst the ten Congress MLAs who had switched sides, a fortnight ago, to join BJP represents BJP camp, which is in majority on the floor of the House.
The ruling coalition is supported by 27 MLAs from BJP, two Independents and one from NCP.
“I am happy to get elected unopposed for the post. I will do justice to the position which is Constitutional in nature,” Fernandes told reporters.
