Panaji : Dengue disease is characterized by mosquito bites and the dengue virus. mosquitoes carrying this disease are said to be active more during the day than at night.
As compared to the year 2020, Dengue cases reported during the past four months till May 2021 are comparatively less. Yet the Directorate of Health Services (DHS) is not willing to risk anything and they are gearing up to combat the disease which is very common during monsoon.
DHS has issued directions to OPDs of health centres saying patients coming to them with complaints of flu and fever in addition to COVID19 test must also be made to undergo dengue and malaria tests.
“Work of destroying breeding sites by paying house-to-house visits is underway” said National Vector Borne Disease Control (NVBDC) programme Goa’s Dy Director and in charge Dr Anant Palekar.
He also said that last year a lot of dengue cases were seen in Calangute but during the lockdown when the tourism hotspot was empty the DHS wasted no time destroying several breeding sites.
Here is how you can prevent the spread of dengue. Firstly, mosquitos thrive in stagnant water usually found in flower pots and empty tyres. Getting rid of stagnant water can help prevent dengue.
Similarly using mosquito repellents and sleeping under mosquito nets can also help.
