Canacona: In a major embarrassment to Canacona police, a team led by Superintendent of Police Tikam Singh Verma busted a gambling den on Goa-Karnataka border arresting 40 persons.

The operation was conducted in the intervening night of Monday-Tuesday at Shel, Loliem by a team led by SP South. The SP had to intervene after Canacona police failed to act in the matter.

Interestingly, police sources confirmed that Ligorio D’Souza was running the place which was owned by his sister, Thelma. Thelma is reportedly out of country.

Canacona Police Inspector Harish Raut Desai told GNH that a notice would be issued to Ligorio under section 41 of CrPC asking him to remain present before the investigation officer.

The case is being investigated by Police Sub Inspector Ajit Velip.

Police said that out of 40 accused arrested under the Gambling Act, seven were held for organising the racket. The gambling was going on in a rented bungalow at Shel, Loliem for quiet some time.

Sources stated that the main kingpin of the racket is from Karwar while he has been enjoying a protection from a local political figure.

GNH will bring in more details of this racket including the protection provided for this gambling activity.
