Panaji: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Wednesday issued show cause notices to more than hundred contractors after issuing strict warning to the government engineers that they would be held responsible for any accident due to pothole on the road.

Sawant on Wednesday held meeting of senior Public Works Department (PWD) officials to take stock of the road conditions in the state.

The Chief Minister told reporters that the system will have to be accountable and that is why several stringent steps are taken by the state government for the safety of the people.

He said that he has issued instructions to senior PWD officials that if there is any accident due to pothole on the road, then the concerned Engineer would be held responsible and action would be initiated against him.

Sawant said that he has also issued show cause notices to the Engineers. The chief minister, who holds PWD portfolio, has also issued show cause notices to more than hundred road contractors.

He said that the road contractors will have to fill the potholes on priority basis as they are supposed to do so as per their “defect liability” clause.

The chief minister said that there would be no additional financial burden on the state government to fill these potholes.

Sawant said that the roads in the state would be pothole free by Ganesh Chaturthi festival.

Ganesh Chaturthi, which is Goa’s one of the most prominent festival, would be celebrated next month.

The Chief Minister said that all the contractors will be asked to re-do the road after October month, without paying them any extra money.
