Mentally challenged woman assaulted mistaking her as child lifter in Cumbharjua village

Panaji: A mentally unstable woman, who was missing from her home, was assaulted by a mob on Tuesday mistaking her as a child lifter in the village of Cumbharjua in North Goa.

The video of a group of women assaulting the victim has gone viral on social media, prompting the local police to issue the clarification.

A senior official at Old Goa police station said that the woman was missing from her home at Marcel village, 5 kms away from the place where she was assaulted.

“One woman was caught at Cumbharjua on October 25, 2022 in the morning hours suspected to be a child lifter,” police have said in their clarification issued to the public.

Police said that the woman was immediately brought to Old Goa Police station and her antecedents were verified. “She is mentally challenged having treatment card of IPHB (Institute of Psychiatry and Human behaviour). She was missing since October 24, 2022 from her residence at Marcel,” police said.

Her parents were contacted and she is admitted in the IPHB.
