Borim: The Department of Library and Information Science of Swami Vivekanand Vidyaprasarak Mandal’s College of Commerce, Borim, Ponda, Goa had organized a “Reading Celebration” for all staff and students, centered around the theme “Every Book Its Reader” – the third law of library science proposed by Dr. S.R. Ranganathan on the occasion of Librarians day on 10th August. The event aimed to attract users by placing clues in “lucky books” and organizing a treasure hunt to find the hidden gifts. This creative approach was designed to satisfy the third law, which emphasizes that every book should find its appropriate reader.
On 12th August 2024, this esteemed occasion showcased the “Gram Gaurav “was graced by the presence of a distinguished personality who has worked for the development of Education as the Chief guest Shri. Subhash Shirodkar, Hon’ble Minister WRD and MLA of Shiroda Constituency, Guest of Honour, Shri. Satish Naik, Sarpanch, Borim, Village Panchayat, Shri. Prakash Prabhu, President of SVVM’s Mandal, Shri. Ratnakar Desai, Secretary and other committee members were present, Shri.Nitin Borkar, son of Shri.Laxmidas Borkar.
Welcome address was given by Officiating Principal Dr. Shekhar Sawant who spoke about the contribution of S.R.Ranganathan the founder of Library Science in India where he shared the five laws of library, threw a light on colon classification and also about his first library at Madras. He also told about the Gram Gaurav of Late Shri. Laxmidas Borkar multifaceted personality who was a freedom fighter, a senior Journalist,Author,Social worker ,a son of the soil of Borim village and told about the screening of the documentary on his life and work. He also shared that a grandparents story telling will be organised on this occasion. He also welcomed the special invitees Shri.Bhaskar Nayak, Shri.Vaman Borkar.
The Gram Gaurav was held to commemorate the centenary death anniversary of late Shri. Laxmidas Krishna Borkar.The screening of the documentary of late Shri.Laxmidas Krishna Borkar was done Echoes of Heroes:The Son of Borim.The aim to do this documentary was to make the students aware about the local heroes and to get inspired by them. His son Mr. Nitin Borkar had helped in making of the documentary film by providing the photographs and necessary information..The documentary threw a light on the great contribution of Shri. Laxmidas Borkar who was a multifaceted personality as a freedom struggle,a senior journalist,an author,a Secretary of National Congress,a treasurer of National Congress and a social worker.The documentary also dealt with other prominent people in Borim who had contributed for the development of the society like Shri Bakibab Borkar,Shri Manjunath Desai etc.
Mrs.Sonia Desai the librarian encouraged the students to take inspiration from Shri. Laxmidas Borkar which was the aim of screening of the documentary. Mr.Satish Naik , guest of honour for the event , stressed about the importance of being aware about local heroes like Shri Laxmidas Borkar.He insisted that students should not waste their time using social media but learn and read about great personalities which will inspire them to work for the betterment of society.
Chief Guest for the event, Shri.Subhash Shirodkar,Hon’ble Minister WRD and MLA of Shiroda Constituency, said that the habit of documentation must be inculcated among all the students and also motivated the students to acquire knowledge as well as good values.He appreciated the contribution done by Shri. Laxmidas Borkar and called him a multifaceted personality whose inspiration must be taken by every individual. According to him reading as well as creative writting both should be done by the students. Mr. Nandesh Dessai a support staff was awarded for his outstanding work on behalf of Department of Library and Information Sciences.The event continued with a delightful session of “Grandparents’ Folk Tales” for Swami Vivekanand Parivaar students from primary section, school and higher secondary school enchanting stories narrated by college students.
The event was skilfully compered by Asst Prof. Girish Kapdi, who kept the audience engaged and entertained throughout the program. The vote of thanks was graciously proposed by librarian Sonia Desai, who expressed gratitude to all the present for making the celebration a resounding success.
