Govt evokes ESMA ahead of two-day general strike from tmro

Panaji: Ahead of two-day general strike called from tomorrow, which will see participation of workers, bank staffers, transporters from Goa also, the State government has evoked Goa Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA).

“Government of Goa in exercise of the power under Sub Section (1) of Section 3 of the Goa Essential Services Maintenance Act, (ESMA) 1988 (Goa Act 20 of 1989) has prohibited strike in any form in all Transport Services for the carriage of passengers or goods by land or water in the State of Goa with immediate effect,” the press statement issued by the government reads.

The order will be valid for a period of six months.

The private bus operators have announced to keep their vehicles off road on January 9, while the banks will remain close on January 8 and 9 as part of nation wide strike call given by the National trade Union convention.

The Goa Government Employees Association has also extended its support to the strike.
