Goa’s COVID-19 positivity rate crosses 10 percent on Sunday

Panaji: As an aftermath of the sea of tourists that visited the state for Christmas and New Year celebrations, the party destination of the country, Goa witnessed its COVID-19 positive rate crossing ten per cent mark on Sunday.

Post-Christmas festivities, the state has been witnessing a surge in the number of COVID-19 cases. The rising numbers also coincides with the increasing number of tourists that visited the beach destination to usher in the New Year celebrations.

Despite restrictions on the late night parties, the celebrations continued on the beaches with revelers partying till the dawn of January 01. As per health department, the state witnessed 388 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday taking the toll to 1,81,570.

 The figures of fatalities due to COVID-19 infection touched 3,523 as one  of the patients succumbed to the infection during the day.

 The number of recovered patients in the state rose to 176376 with 54 of them getting discharged on Saturday. The number of active cases is now 1671, the official said.

  “With 3604 new tests, the total number of tests conducted in the state has gone up to 16,34,704,”  he added.

South Goa’s commercial town of Margao has the maximum number of active cases with 211 people continuing to be infected with the COVID-19 infection followed by the capital city of Panaji, which has 201 active infected people.

 Goa’s COVID-19 figures: Positive cases 1,81,182, new cases 310, death toll 3522, discharged 176322, active cases 1338, samples tested till date 16,31,100.
