Panaji: Newly-elected Goa Youth Congress President Joel Andrade took charge of the grand old party’s youth wing at an impressive ceremony held at Mariotts Resort and Spa, Panaji. Indian Youth Congress (IYC) Secretary and Incharge of Goa Richi Bhargava and Former State Congress President, Girish Chodankar handed over the party baton to Andrade and his team on Monday.

While speaking at the installation ceremony of the new committee members of the Goa Pradesh Youth Congress he said that the organisation will be vibrant and active, and also said that the Bharat Jodo Yatra has been an enriching experience for him.

“I am happy to officially take charge as President of the Goa Pradesh Youth Congress in the presence of my mentor Girish Chodankar and IYC secretary Incharge of Goa Richi Bhargava. On behalf of our committee, I thank our Congress party and leadership for giving a young and budding leader like me the opportunity to lead this organisation,” Andrade said.

“We assure the people of Goa that we will be an active and vibrant unit of the Indian Youth Congress. People ask us why we are doing the Bharat Jodo Yatra. We are doing the yatra to raise our voice on social, political and economic issues, to give warmth and love to the people of this country. Today people are suffering from unemployment, inflation, injustice ..the list goes on. The opposition talks about what T-shirts we wear, which hotels we organise our events in, when our leader drinks tea, the image is morphed of him drinking alcohol and circulated. How long will they continue doing this? Personally for me, the Bharat Jodo Yatra has been an enriching experience, an experience of a lifetime that I will forever cherish,” he added.

“Today is also a historic day for us in Goa as on this day we had the Opinion Poll in 1967, an opinion that decided the future of Goa. What better day to take charge of this organisation. 50 odd years later, our fight to protect and retain our identity continues,” Andrade also said.

IYC Secretary and Incharge of Goa Richi Bhargava congratulated the new President and handed over the appointment letter to the President at the function.

Congratulating the new committee members, Chodankar urged the new Goa Youth Congress President to take up issues aggressively and be the voice of the youth.

“The new youth president should be among the youth of Goa and raise issues such as drugs, unemployment, education, etc, and become the face and voice of youth of Goa and take up their issues aggressively, exposing the misdeeds of the government. Getting arrested, going to jail, etc, builds your leadership. Build the organisation, boost the membership, and connect with the youth. Youth Congress’ job is to build tomorrow’s leaders and cadre to take the party forward,” Girish said.

North Goa District President Rinaldo Rozario said that the Congress party needs the youth to gather around and come together to rebuild the party.

“The Youth Congress has shown its mettle through the successful Bharat Jodo Yatra that has taken the country by storm. It has been the backbone of the Congress during the Covid-19 pandemic, where party workers rallied around to help those in need. It is one group of people that can rejuvenate the party and not be downhearted,” he said.

In his vote of thanks the South Goa District President, Mahesh Nadar expressed gratitude to senior party leaders Indian National Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi Gandhi, IYC President Srinivas BV, joint secretary- IYC Krishna Allavaru and others.

“Our task begins now. It is now that we head out to the field. To bring people together, to help organise and educate, to build a better society and to help the party build a base on which it can fight elections and win them. We will lead the way and be at the forefront of agitations making our presence felt in agitations leading from the front, courting arrest and making sure that we lend muscle to the voice of the people that is otherwise being drowned out by the din of the ruling party’s propaganda machine,” he said.
