Panaji: Appealing people not to get panicked over Omicron scare, Goa chief minister Pramod Sawant said that the state plans to get fully vaccinated by December 19, which is state’s liberation day.

“There is no need to panic over Omicron,” Sawant told reporters on Monday late evening at the backdrop of five suspects being isolated for being infected with Omicron.

“Do not call them as Omicron suspect. We have sent their samples for genome sequencing,” the chief minister said.

Five persons including two Russians, who are crew of a mercant navy ship, that anchored at Mormugao Port Trust were tested positive for covid-19 infection. The ship had arrived from Cape Town and hence the crew are isolated at a facility in Goa, while their samples have been sent for genome sequencing.

He said that the state has been aggressive in vaccinating its population against COVID-19 infection. Sawant said that there are more 1.20 lakh people, who are yet to take their second dose of vaccination.

“I appeal all of them to get vaccinated as early as possible so that the state can become fully vaccinated by December 19,” he said.

Goa had become the first state to complete first dose of COVID-19   vaccine in September 2021.
