GMPF meets Nitin Gadkari; presses for amendment

Panaji: Building up their pressure on Central government to re-start mining industry in Goa, the Goa Mining People’s Front (GMPF), today met Union Minister for Shipping and chairman of Group of Ministers on mining Nitin Gadkari demanding immediate amendment to the provisions of MMDR Act.

During the meeting Gadkari assured that he has raised the matter with Prime Minister to help the people of Goa.

“Gadkari assured that he has spoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Mines Minister Narendra Singh Tomar and Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad to expedite the process for resumption of mining in Goa,” Union Leader Puti Gaonkar said in a press statement released.

The State Government has sought amendment to the MMDR Act for extending the life of leases till 2037.

The file is currently pending with Attorney General of India.

GMPF had on Wednesday met Union Minister for Commerce Suresh Prabhu and Union Minister for Law Ravi Shankar Prasad , who are members of Group of Ministers on mining.
