Panaji: In an effort to combat the growing concern of tobacco consumption among youth, Mushtifund High School’s Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) organized an awareness talk on Tobacco and Substance Abuse for students of Standard VIII at Mushtifund High School, Cujira, Bambolim, Goa, on 17th December 2024.
Dr. Shekhar Salkar, renowned oncologist and President of the National Organisation for Tobacco Eradication (NOTE) India, was invited as the guest speaker. Dr. Salkar was accompanied by Dr. Devdatta Sail, Secretary of NOTE India, for the session.
Around 200 students from Mushtifund High School attended the orientation program. Dr. Salkar enlightened the students on the various harms and hazards associated with tobacco and drug use. The talk aimed to educate students about the harmful effects of tobacco, with a focus on prevention and promoting healthier lifestyle choices.
Dr. Salkar addressed the severe health risks associated with smoking and chewing tobacco, including lung diseases, cancer, and heart conditions. The talk also highlighted the impact of tobacco use on academic performance, mental health, and overall well-being.
Mrs. Pinki Fadte, Assistant Teacher at the school, compered the program, and Mrs. Anisha Sinai Salgaonkar, Secretary of the MHSPTA, introduced the dignitaries to the audience. Others present on the dais were Mrs. Aparna Chari, Headmistress of Mushtifund High School; Mrs. Nandan Sardesai, Vice-Chairperson of MHSPTA; and Mrs. Beena Shankhwalker, Assistant Headmistress of the school. Teachers from the school also attended the session. Mr. Sagarv Agni, Chairman of MHSPTA, coordinated the program.
Mrs. Aparna Chari expressed the institution’s commitment to student health and well-being, stating, “We believe that raising awareness about the dangers of tobacco is a crucial part of fostering responsible, health-conscious young individuals.”
Dr. Devdatta Sail, Secretary of NOTE India, mentioned that the talk is part of a series of public awareness programs. The awareness campaign ended with a question-and-answer session. Three prizes were awarded to students for their enthusiastic participation in the talk.
