Panaji: The court on Tuesday issued notice to AAP Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh, returnable on January 10, 2025, in connection with the Rs 100 crore defamation suit filed by Sulakshana Sawant, wife of CM Dr. Pramod Sawant, for naming her in the cash-for-jobs scam in Goa.
During a recent press conference in Delhi, Singh had accused Sulakshana of being part of the cash-for-jobs scam, which was investigated by Goa police following a series of complaints against different accused in the state.
Sawant filed a defamation case on Tuesday against Singh, directing him to pay her Rs 100 crore in damages for defaming her.
The Adhoc Civil Judge at Bicholim in North Goa heard the petition on Tuesday and issued notice to Singh, returnable on January 10, 2025.
Lawyers Advocate S. Sardesai and Advocate R. Punjabi appeared on behalf of Sawant.
Sawant has asked the court to direct the defendant to publish an apology in terms to be stated by the plaintiff or in such terms as the court deems fit in a prominent place, clarifying that the said defamatory video/article and interview are false, not based on facts, and to tender an unconditional apology to the plaintiff.
The petition also stated that, pending final disposal of the present suit, the defendant, either personally or through his associates, representatives, sympathizers, supporters, hirelings, agents, or any person acting through him, may kindly be restrained by an injunction from making public statements maligning the plaintiff.
Sawant has requested that, pending disposal of the present suit, the defendant, personally or through his associates, representatives, sympathizers, supporters, hirelings, agents, or any person acting through him, may be restrained by an injunction from making any statement on social media or other platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter in respect of the plaintiff that will harm, malign, and defame the plaintiff.
