Margao: Congress in Goa on Tuesday demanded that Vasco town, which has been reporting spike in the COVID-19 cases, should be locked down.

Addressing a press conference, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee President Girish Chodankar also demanded that there should be random and aggressive testing of the people from this city.

“All the local MLAs are asking for the lockdown of the city. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has been reluctant in the lockdown as he is having his personal interests,” he said.

“CM should not expose the people to the virus due to his wrong decisions,” he added.

He alleged that the Chief Minister was postponing the lockdown of Vasco town to allow the transportation of coal from a vessel which is docked at Mormugao Port Trust.

“CM has personal vested interest in the transportation of coal along with his minister Milind Naik,” Chodankar alleged adding that the coal from the ship will be off loaded in next two-three days.

“We demand that chief minister has to come clear on what are his personal interest in the transportation business,” he said.

Vasco town has been witnessing rise in the COVID-19 cases including those from Mangor Hill, which has already been notified as containment zone by State government.

Chodankar said that the chief minister should take entire responsibility of current situation where Goa has reported 300-odd positive cases from its positive of zero cases a month back.

He said that it is also sad that the health care workers who are posted in the containment zone are getting infected with the virus.
