Cuncolim: The Cuncolim town in South Goa remained tense last night as several hundred people gathered outside the police station demanding the arrest of a teacher who has been accused of endangering the life of a seven-year-old student. The locals stated that the incident happened on September 28, in which the girl suffered severe injuries to her eyes, leading to internal bleeding. She was injured while attending her classes in the school.

While the girl was rushed to the hospital, where she remains admitted to this date, the parents of the victim filed a complaint at Cuncolim police station. Lady Police Sub Inspector Kavita Rawat, who was investigating the case, allegedly refused to file the First Information Report. As the girl remained critically injured in the hospital, the locals were upset as the police continued refusing to file an FIR against the teacher.

Cuncolim police finally filed the FIR against the accused on October 2, when locals chalked out a protest march on the police station. The locals marched to the police station on Wednesday evening, demanding the immediate arrest of the accused and the suspension of PSI Kavita Rawat. Senior police officers, including newly promoted SP Santosh Dessai and SP (South) Sunita Sawant, rushed to the police station, even as the mob, mostly comprising women, demanded that the teacher be arrested immediately.

The commotion prevailed until late night, and the crowd dispersed after giving a deadline of Friday for the police to take action. Meanwhile, senior police officers are expected to arrive at Cuncolim police station Thursday to take stock of the situation. It is to be seen what action will be initiated against Lady PSI Rawat, who has been accused of grossly mishandling the case.
