Aam Aadmi Party has said the resolution passed by the Village Panchayat of Calangute yesterday shows that people of the village were aware of local MLA Michael Lobo’s real intentions behind getting Calangute notified as a “urban” area. AAP Calangute leader Manuel Cardozo said that the issue came up in the Panchayat meeting only because people of Calangute were unanimously and vociferously opposed to the destruction of their village.
“The hurried resolution by the panchayat vindicates AAP’s stand that Lobo was worried about the political fallout of this high-handed decision. But the matter does not end here. We will keep up the pressure until the notification is officially withdrawn”, Cardozo said.
Cardozo informed that people of Calangute have appreciated AAP’s continuous actions on the matter, including the memorandum sent to the Chief Minister and concerned authorities. Cardozo also added that the party’s statements spread awareness of Lobo’s true intentions behind this notification.
“We reminded the people that last year, 56 villages were notified as “urban”, which were then denotified after public opposition. We asked the people to think about why only Calangute village was singled out for notification again this year. People had no doubt that Lobo is behind this act, as it would not only save his own properties from demolition orders, but would also allow him to raise “election funds” for 2022 by giving permissions for indiscriminate development under the new rules”, Cardozo said.
Carodozo said that villagers of entire Calangute constituency have now realised Lobo’s continuous attempts over the years to enact various changes – such as diluting CZMP plans, or bringing PDA, or the latest notification to declare Calangute as urban area – that would destroy the villages forever,.
