Solution for mining crisis by next month: CM

Panaji: Assuring to provide solution for crisis-ridden mining industry in the State by next month, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has ruled out demand of mining dependents to give them allowance to sustain till the industry resumes.
Goa Mining People’s Front (GMPF), a union of mining dependents met Sawant on Wednesday to discuss various matters related to the mining industry which has been shut down since last year.
The Supreme Court had quashed 88 mining leases shutting down entire industry in the coastal state.
“During the meeting, the issue of allowance for mining dependents to sustain till industry resumes was discussed. The allowance was demanded to those who had lost their livelihood due to closure of the industry,” a spokesman of GMPF said in a statement released here.
The chief minister said that such a demand need not be entertained as solution for the crisis hovering on mining industry would be found out by July, this year, the spokesman said.
“The CM said that the mining issue was discussed in NITI Ayog last week that was presided by Prime Minister. Sawant said that he had explained to the centre that Goa’s mining issue is unique and cannot be generalized with other states,” he said.
GMPF has said that chief minister told its delegation that he has been able to convince the centre to find immediate solution for the mining issue.
Sawant also said that he will participate in the high level meeting scheduled to be held next month in Delhi. But if solution is not worked out, state will not hold back solutions like forming mining corporation or auctioning the leases.
The chief minister said that e-auctioning of the ore that is lying across the state would be taken up shortly.
The spokesman said that chief minister has also agreed to look into the demand of extending the date of availing debt relief scheme for truck and barge (ship) owners.
