Margao: The situation turned tense in Margao city on Saturday after several hundred people gathered outside the police station demanding action against the person who defamed the muslim religion on the social media.

Several hundred people walked to Margao police station in South Goa on Saturday morning condemning the delay in arresting a person who had posted social media message defaming muslim religion.

The formal complaint was lodged at Margao and Ponda police stations (both in South District) on Friday evening against the social media post. The protestors were upset that there was delay in zeroing on the accused by the police.

Police tried to calm down the protestors by stating that they have already registered First Information Report in the matter and cyber team is constituted to investigate the case filed against “unknown accused.”

The office of Superintendent of Police (South) wrote on ‘X’ (formerly twitter) “FIR registered and South District cyber team is constituted to thoroughly investigate case registered against unknown person regarding defamatory post on Instagram hurting religious sentiments received at Margao and Ponda Police station.”

But despite the clarification, the crowd continued swelling outside Margao police station on Saturday.

“The chief minister has specifically said that anyone hurting religious sentiment would not be tolerated. We are here to question police why no arrest is made in the matter till now,” one of the protestor said.

He said that the crowd want immediate arrest of the accused.
