Margao:  The Shadow Council for Margao has called for an inquiry in the issue of tarpaulin covering of Sonsodo dump-yard for the current monsoons.

With the state of the tarpaulin covering at sonsodo ending in bit’s and tatters, the Shadow Council for Margao has questioned the wastage of public funds, since the very purpose of covering the dump-yard is not achieved.

Right from the time the work of covering had begun, the SCM has been raising doubts over the quality of tarpaulin used.

“Apart from the quality of the tarpaulin, the SCM is set to wonder how much area is actually going to be covered, as the estimated area to be covered is 27000sq mts for an expenditure of 13 lakhs”, convener Savio Coutinho stated. The total land area is 15000sq mts, which includes the old shed, road access and open area reserved for daily waste, Coutinho informed further.

With the monsoon season having already advanced into the second month and the total rainfall nearing the half way mark, the covering of the dump-yard now remains just a formality at public cost, with no purpose being served.

It is indeed interesting to note that the dump portion visible to the users of Margao-Curtorim road is covered, while the top section which actually needs covering is left open to the sky.

And the huge quantity of rain water having already entered into the waste, lechate has started flowing into the drains, thereby polluting the surrounding lower areas.

SCM, in the past have raised several issues to prove how some individuals within the Council are tapping every opportunity to make wealth out of waste. Even the sensational AC Dustbin Room scam got hushed up with no inquiry whatsoever.

The SCM call’s upon TCP Minister and Fatorda MLA Vijay Sardesai to order an inquiry into this issue and safeguard the Municipal Treasury from this organised loot.
