New Delhi: In a major development related to the disqualification against the Eight MLAs who switched over from Congress to BJP, the Supreme Court has said that it hopes and trusts that the constitutional obligations will be discharged by Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar.
Former GPCC chief Girish Chodankar had moved to the apex court seeking directions to Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar to dispose off the disqualification petition filed against eight MLAs within three months, as per the SC order.
Chodankar had filed a disqualification petition before the Speaker against all the eight MLAs led by Digambar Kamat and Michael Lobo, who shifted sides to the BJP.
When the petition came for hearing before the SC on September 2, the division Bench comprising of Mr. Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Mr Justice Sanjay Kumar ruled “We hope and trust that Constitutional obligations will be discharged by respondent No. 1 by the next date of hearing.”
The lawyer representing the Speaker had sought time of eight weeks to file reply before the Supreme Court.
The matter is now fixed on November 4, 2024.
