Mhadei issue: MOEF keeps consent granted to Kalasa-Banduri project in Abyeance

Panaji: In a major victory to Goa,  Union Ministry for Environment and Forest (MOEF) today kept in abyeance its consent granted to Karnataka’s Kalasa-Banduri project over River Mhadei.
A fresh letter in this regard had been issued by Ministry to Karnataka’s Neervari Nigam Ltd. The letter is been issued following Chief Minister Pramod Sawant meeting with Union Minister Prakash Javdekar in Delhi.
“Based on the facts made available subsequently to this Ministry, it is observed that applications for classification of the Award of the Mhadei water dispute tribunal dated 14/08/2018 filed by government of Goa and Karnataka are still pending,”  deputy director MOEF Mohit Saxena said in the letter.
“The award has also been challenged by government of Goa, Karnataka and Maharashtra before supreme Court. In SLP filed by State of Goa, Supreme Court has issued notice to State of Karnataka,” he added.
“Pending resolution of all these cases relating to the matte, the letter issued earlier by the Ministry is hereby kept in abyeance,” Saxena added.
