Panaji: Former Goa MLA Lavoo Mamlatdar passed away on Saturday in the neighboring Belagavi town in Karnataka after collapsing on the staircase of the hotel where he was staying, a senior official said.

A senior Karnataka police official stated that Mamlatdar (68) was brought to a city hospital after collapsing on the staircase of his hotel in Belagavi.

He said that the former MLA was on a business trip to Belagavi on Saturday, during which he was assaulted by a rickshaw driver. Police said that CCTV footage from the spot reveals that the rickshaw driver assaulted Mamlatdar.

The deceased was formerly attached to Goa Police at the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police before joining politics in 2012.

After the assault, he returned to his hotel, where he later collapsed on the staircase. “He was declared brought in dead,” the official said.
