Panaji, July 20, 2026: The Department of Tourism, Government of Goa, is all set to welcome visitors and devotees to experience the vibrant festivities of the Chikhal Kalo Festival 2026 from 24th to 26th July near Shree Devki Krishna Temple, Marcel. This three-day festive extravaganza will feature a special performance by National Award-winning vocalist Mahesh Kale, along with one of Goa’s most cherished monsoon traditions. The inaugural ceremony will be held on 24th July at 6:00 PM.
Celebrated during the monsoon season, the festival of Chikhal Kalo recreates the playful childhood of Lord Krishna through spirited mud games, devotional rituals, and community participation, bringing together devotees, locals, and visitors alike. Rooted in centuries-old tradition, the festival has grown into one of Goa’s most unique cultural experiences, attracting devotees, travellers, photographers, and cultural enthusiasts from across India and beyond, who come together to witness and participate in this joyous celebration.
Tourism Minister Rohan A. Khaunte said: “Chikhal Kalo is one of those festivals that truly captures the warmth and spirit of Goa. This year, the festival promises a vibrant blend of spirituality, music, and tradition through a series of engaging events. The celebrations will commence on July 24 with a Cooking Competition, followed by the musical programme ‘Anubhooti’, just ahead of the formal inaugural ceremony. The evening will conclude with ‘Abhangwari’, presented by National Award-winning vocalist Mahesh Kale. The celebrations will continue on July 25 (Ashadhi Ekadashi) with a traditional bhajan recital at the temple, culminating in the iconic Chikhal Kalo mud play on July 26 (Dwadashi) at 11:00 AM—the festival’s most anticipated highlight, bringing to life the spirit of Lord Krishna’s childhood.
The festival is hosted near Shree Devki Krishna Temple, dedicated to Lord Krishna and his mother, Goddess Devki. Nestled amidst Goa’s verdant monsoon landscape, the temple offers visitors a rare opportunity to experience the state’s rich spiritual heritage.
The mud games, inspired by the playful exploits of young Krishna, transform the temple grounds into a vibrant arena where people of all ages come together in a spirit of joy, equality, and community.
The festival will also feature traditional Goan vegetarian cuisine, cultural performances, traditional games and activities, as well as a Photography and Reel Competition themed ‘Monsoon Magic of Goa’, offering visitors multiple ways to engage with the celebration.
